Samsung has added another interesting option to its lineup with the all-new Samsung I9001 Galaxy S Plus, and on paper it looks like a device that wants to be your daily driver. Announced in 2011, April. Released 2011, July, it arrives at a time when the competition is as tight as ever.
Design & Display
Up front there is a 4.0 inches, 45.5 cm 2 (~58.0% screen-to-body ratio) screen, pushing a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels, 5:3 ratio (~233 ppi density), which is more than sharp enough for everyday use, streaming and a bit of gaming. The build feels well put together, and Samsung has clearly paid attention to the in-hand feel. You can pick it up in a few finishes, including Black.
Performance & Software
At the heart of it sits the Qualcomm MSM8255T Snapdragon S2, which means smooth scrolling, quick app switching and no real hiccups in normal use. It runs Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), TouchWiz UI 3 out of the box, so the software experience feels current.
Camera
The camera setup is one of the talking points here, with a 5 MP sensor doing the heavy lifting. It is not a pro camera rig, but for everyday memories it gets the job done nicely.
Battery
Keeping the lights on is a Removable Li-Ion 1650 mAh battery cell, which should comfortably see most people through a full day on a single charge.
Our Opinion
So, what do we actually make of the Samsung I9001 Galaxy S Plus? What you are getting is a device that quietly covers the fundamentals rather than shouting about them. It gets the basics right, offering a dependable main camera, a crisp display, which is exactly what most buyers are really after. For someone who simply wants a dependable daily driver that will not let them down halfway through the day, this ticks a lot of boxes. Is it perfect? No phone is, and you will always find a sharper camera or a faster chip somewhere else for a little more money. But taken as a whole, the Samsung I9001 Galaxy S Plus is a sensible, well-judged choice that should keep most users happy for a good while.
