With the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge, Samsung is clearly aiming at buyers who want a well-rounded phone without too many compromises. Here is our take on what it brings to the table. Announced in 2016, February 21. Released 2016, March 11, it arrives at a time when the competition is as tight as ever.
Design & Display
Up front there is a 5.5 inches, 83.4 cm 2 (~76.1% screen-to-body ratio) screen, pushing a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels, 16:9 ratio (~534 ppi density), and in real-world use it looks bright, crisp and easy on the eyes. In terms of design, the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge keeps things modern and comfortable to hold. You can pick it up in a few finishes, including Black.
Performance & Software
At the heart of it sits the Qualcomm MSM8996 Snapdragon 820 (14 nm) - G9350 Exynos 8890 Octa (14 nm) - G935FD, G935F, G935W8, paired with 4GB of RAM. For the kind of tasks most of us throw at a phone, there is plenty of muscle here. It runs Android 6.0 (Marshmallow), upgradable to Android 8.0 (Oreo), TouchWiz UI out of the box, so the software experience feels current.
Camera
On the camera side, the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge is led by a 12 MP main sensor. Point-and-shoot results are reliable, and that is exactly what most buyers want.
Battery
There is a Li-Ion 3600 mAh, non-removable battery inside, which should comfortably see most people through a full day on a single charge.
Our Opinion
After spending time with the spec sheet and what Samsung is promising, here is where we land. This is a phone that does not try to be the flashiest option on the shelf, and honestly that works in its favour. It gets the basics right, offering a dependable main camera, a crisp display, which is exactly what most buyers are really after. If your priority is a phone that just works, day in and day out, then this one deserves a spot on your shortlist. Is it perfect? No phone is, and you will always find a sharper camera or a faster chip somewhere else for a little more money. Overall though, the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge is easy to recommend to the right buyer.
