Samsung has added another interesting option to its lineup with the all-new Samsung Galaxy S6, and on paper it looks like a device that wants to be your daily driver. Announced in 2015, March 01. Released 2015, April, it arrives at a time when the competition is as tight as ever.
Design & Display
On the front you get a 5.1 inches, 71.5 cm 2 (~70.7% screen-to-body ratio) panel, pushing a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels, 16:9 ratio (~577 ppi density), which is more than sharp enough for everyday use, streaming and a bit of gaming. In terms of design, the Samsung Galaxy S6 keeps things modern and comfortable to hold. You can pick it up in a few finishes, including White Pearl.
Performance & Software
At the heart of it sits the Exynos 7420 Octa (14 nm), paired with 3GB of RAM. That combination should handle day-to-day multitasking and most games without breaking a sweat. It runs Android 5.0.2 (Lollipop), upgradable to Android 7, TouchWiz UI out of the box, so the software experience feels current.
Camera
The camera setup is one of the talking points here, with a 16 MP sensor doing the heavy lifting. Expect solid detail in good light, with the usual softness creeping in once the sun goes down.
Battery
Keeping the lights on is a Li-Ion 2550 mAh, non-removable cell, and that is a healthy number that keeps range anxiety at bay.
Our Opinion
Coming to the important bit, our opinion on the Samsung Galaxy S6. Samsung has clearly gone for substance over gimmicks here, and we respect that approach. It gets the basics right, offering a dependable main camera, a crisp display, which is exactly what most buyers are really after. In day-to-day use it feels like the kind of device you can rely on, whether you are replying to messages, scrolling through social media, watching videos or taking the odd photo. Is it perfect? No phone is, and you will always find a sharper camera or a faster chip somewhere else for a little more money. Overall though, the Samsung Galaxy S6 is easy to recommend to the right buyer.
