The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra is Samsung's latest attempt to grab your attention, and after going through the spec sheet, there is a fair bit here worth talking about. Announced in 2020, February 11, it arrives at a time when the competition is as tight as ever.
Design & Display
Up front there is a 6.9 inches, 114.0 cm 2 (~89.9% screen-to-body ratio) screen, pushing a resolution of 1440 x 3200 pixels, 20:9 ratio (~511 ppi density). Colours look punchy and text stays clean, so you will not have much to complain about here. The build feels well put together, and Samsung has clearly paid attention to the in-hand feel. You can pick it up in a few finishes, including Cosmic Grey.
Performance & Software
Under the hood you will find the Exynos 990 (7 nm+) Qualcomm SM8250 Snapdragon 865 5G (7 nm+), paired with 12GB of RAM. That combination should handle day-to-day multitasking and most games without breaking a sweat. It runs Android 10, upgradable to Android 13, One UI 5 out of the box, so the software experience feels current.
Camera
Photography is handled by a main 108 MP shooter that should cover most situations, from daylight shots to the occasional low-light frame. Expect solid detail in good light, with the usual softness creeping in once the sun goes down.
Battery
Battery duties are handled by a Li-Ion 5000 mAh unit, and that is a healthy number that keeps range anxiety at bay.
Our Opinion
After spending time with the spec sheet and what Samsung is promising, here is where we land. Samsung has clearly gone for substance over gimmicks here, and we respect that approach. It gets the basics right, offering strong battery life, 5G connectivity, a dependable main camera, which is exactly what most buyers are really after. For someone who simply wants a dependable daily driver that will not let them down halfway through the day, this ticks a lot of boxes. You could nitpick a few things, as you can with any phone in this bracket. But taken as a whole, the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra is a sensible, well-judged choice that should keep most users happy for a good while.
