Phone Opinions Review

Samsung has added another interesting option to its lineup with the all-new Samsung Galaxy Note 4, and on paper it looks like a device that wants to be your daily driver. Announced in 2014, September 03. Released 2014, October, it arrives at a time when the competition is as tight as ever.

Design & Display

Up front there is a 5.7 inches, 88.5 cm 2 (~73.4% screen-to-body ratio) screen, pushing a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels, 16:9 ratio (~518 ppi density), and in real-world use it looks bright, crisp and easy on the eyes. The build feels well put together, and Samsung has clearly paid attention to the in-hand feel. You can pick it up in a few finishes, including Frosted white.

Performance & Software

Powering the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is the Qualcomm APQ8084 Snapdragon 805 (28 nm) Exynos 5433, paired with 3GB of RAM, which means smooth scrolling, quick app switching and no real hiccups in normal use. It runs Android 4.4.4 (KitKat), upgradable to 6.0.1 (Marshmallow) out of the box, so the software experience feels current.

Camera

Photography is handled by a main 16 MP shooter that should cover most situations, from daylight shots to the occasional low-light frame. It is not a pro camera rig, but for everyday memories it gets the job done nicely.

Battery

There is a Li-Ion 3220 mAh, removable battery inside, and that is a healthy number that keeps range anxiety at bay.

Our Opinion

Coming to the important bit, our opinion on the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. What you are getting is a device that quietly covers the fundamentals rather than shouting about them. It gets the basics right, offering a dependable main camera, a crisp display, which is exactly what most buyers are really after. For someone who simply wants a dependable daily driver that will not let them down halfway through the day, this ticks a lot of boxes. There are rivals that beat it in one area or another, as is always the case in this segment. Even so, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 holds its own and represents a solid, no-nonsense buy. If you have used this device or are planning to pick one up, do let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
