Samsung has added another interesting option to its lineup with the all-new Samsung Galaxy Fold, and on paper it looks like a device that wants to be your daily driver. Announced in 2019, February. Released 2019, September, it arrives at a time when the competition is as tight as ever.
Design & Display
The Samsung Galaxy Fold comes with a 7.3 inches, 162.6 cm 2 (~85.7% screen-to-body ratio) display, pushing a resolution of 1536 x 2152 pixels (~362 ppi density), which is more than sharp enough for everyday use, streaming and a bit of gaming. The build feels well put together, and Samsung has clearly paid attention to the in-hand feel. You can pick it up in a few finishes, including Space Silver.
Performance & Software
Under the hood you will find the Qualcomm SM8150 Snapdragon 855 (7 nm), paired with 12GB of RAM. That combination should handle day-to-day multitasking and most games without breaking a sweat. It runs Android 9.0 (Pie), upgradable to Android 12, One UI 4 out of the box, so the software experience feels current.
Camera
On the camera side, the Samsung Galaxy Fold is led by a 12 MP main sensor (12 MP, f/1.5-2.4, 27mm (wide), 1/2.55", 1.4µm, dual pixel PDAF, OIS 12 MP, f/2.4, 52mm (te…). Expect solid detail in good light, with the usual softness creeping in once the sun goes down.
Battery
Keeping the lights on is a Li-Po 4380 mAh, non-removable cell, and that is a healthy number that keeps range anxiety at bay.
Our Opinion
Coming to the important bit, our opinion on the Samsung Galaxy Fold. Samsung has clearly gone for substance over gimmicks here, and we respect that approach. It gets the basics right, offering a dependable main camera, a crisp display, which is exactly what most buyers are really after. If your priority is a phone that just works, day in and day out, then this one deserves a spot on your shortlist. There are rivals that beat it in one area or another, as is always the case in this segment. Overall though, the Samsung Galaxy Fold is easy to recommend to the right buyer.
