Jio vs Airtel Ugly fight continues with eSIM activation on new iPhone’s

The new iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max hitting the stores worldwide. In India, the new iPhones likely to be available from September 28, 2018. The pre-orders started in various stores.

The old and new telecom giants, Airtel and Jio, begin their contest over the new iPhone sales. Both of them announced the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max will be available in their respective stores from September 28.

Here, Jio comes up with a special announcement that it would be the first and only service provider to offer eSIM activation. Here is the statement. “Jio will exclusively enable the advanced eSIM feature on Apple’s latest iPhones for both Jio prepaid and postpaid users. Currently, Jio is the only service provider in the country to offer eSIM activation for prepaid users”.

While Jio is open and bold about eSIM activation, Airtel has not made any official statement about eSIM activation. Some medias stating that airtel spokespersons were confirming that Airtel customers would get eSIM activation.

If you want to know about eSIM, here is the short explanation. eSIM stands for Embedded SIM (and SIM stands for Subscriber Identity Module). The eSIM is virtual. It can be activated remotely. It cannot be pulled out like a physical SIM. So, with this eSIM, you can switch service providers without the need to change the SIM.

But you have to note that, you can only switch to the service provider who is providing eSIM activation. I think here is where the ugly fight stands between Airtel and Jio. As Jio announces it is the sole service provider in India for eSIM activation. It silently says all new iPhone buyers can get eSIM activation only from them.

But the reports say both Airtel and Jio are official eSIM telecom partners for new iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. So, the fight is still on.
