Apple has added another interesting option to its lineup with the all-new Apple Watch Series 2 Aluminum 42mm, and on paper it looks like a device that wants to be your daily driver. Announced in 2016, September. Released 2016, December, it arrives at a time when the competition is as tight as ever.
Design & Display
Up front there is a 1.65 inches screen, pushing a resolution of 390 x 312 pixels (~303 ppi density), which is more than sharp enough for everyday use, streaming and a bit of gaming. It is not trying to reinvent the wheel with its design, but it does look the part. You can pick it up in a few finishes, including Case colors: silver.
Performance & Software
At the heart of it sits the Apple S2 (16 nm). That combination should handle day-to-day multitasking and most games without breaking a sweat. It runs watchOS 3.0, upgradable to watchOS 6.2.8 out of the box, so the software experience feels current.
Camera
Photography is handled by a main shooter that should cover most situations, from daylight shots to the occasional low-light frame. Point-and-shoot results are reliable, and that is exactly what most buyers want.
Battery
There is a Li-Ion 334 mAh (1.27 Wh), non-removable battery inside. With moderate use you can expect to end the day with charge to spare.
Our Opinion
Coming to the important bit, our opinion on the Apple Watch Series 2 Aluminum 42mm. Apple has clearly gone for substance over gimmicks here, and we respect that approach. It gets the basics right, offering a crisp display, which is exactly what most buyers are really after. For someone who simply wants a dependable daily driver that will not let them down halfway through the day, this ticks a lot of boxes. Is it perfect? No phone is, and you will always find a sharper camera or a faster chip somewhere else for a little more money. But taken as a whole, the Apple Watch Series 2 Aluminum 42mm is a sensible, well-judged choice that should keep most users happy for a good while.
