With the Apple iPhone X, Apple is clearly aiming at buyers who want a well-rounded phone without too many compromises. Here is our take on what it brings to the table. Announced in 2017, September 12. Released 2017, November 03, it arrives at a time when the competition is as tight as ever.
Design & Display
The Apple iPhone X comes with a 5.8 inches, 84.4 cm 2 (~82.9% screen-to-body ratio) display, pushing a resolution of 1125 x 2436 pixels, 19.5:9 ratio (~458 ppi density). Colours look punchy and text stays clean, so you will not have much to complain about here. It is not trying to reinvent the wheel with its design, but it does look the part. You can pick it up in a few finishes, including Space Gray.
Performance & Software
Under the hood you will find the Apple A11 Bionic (10 nm), paired with 3GB of RAM, which means smooth scrolling, quick app switching and no real hiccups in normal use. It runs iOS 11.1.1, up to iOS 16.7.12 out of the box, so the software experience feels current.
Camera
On the camera side, the Apple iPhone X is led by a 12 MP main sensor (12 MP, f/1.8, 28mm (wide), 1/3.0", 1.22µm, dual pixel PDAF, OIS 12 MP, f/2.4, 52mm (teleph…). Expect solid detail in good light, with the usual softness creeping in once the sun goes down.
Battery
Keeping the lights on is a Li-Ion 2716 mAh, non-removable (10.35 Wh) cell. With moderate use you can expect to end the day with charge to spare.
Our Opinion
After spending time with the spec sheet and what Apple is promising, here is where we land. What you are getting is a device that quietly covers the fundamentals rather than shouting about them. It gets the basics right, offering a dependable main camera, a crisp display, which is exactly what most buyers are really after. In day-to-day use it feels like the kind of device you can rely on, whether you are replying to messages, scrolling through social media, watching videos or taking the odd photo. There are rivals that beat it in one area or another, as is always the case in this segment. Even so, the Apple iPhone X holds its own and represents a solid, no-nonsense buy.
