With the Apple iPhone 6s, Apple is clearly aiming at buyers who want a well-rounded phone without too many compromises. Here is our take on what it brings to the table. Announced in 2015, September 09. Released 2015, September 25, it arrives at a time when the competition is as tight as ever.
Design & Display
The Apple iPhone 6s comes with a 4.7 inches, 60.9 cm 2 (~65.6% screen-to-body ratio) display, pushing a resolution of 750 x 1334 pixels, 16:9 ratio (~326 ppi density), which is more than sharp enough for everyday use, streaming and a bit of gaming. It is not trying to reinvent the wheel with its design, but it does look the part. You can pick it up in a few finishes, including Space Gray.
Performance & Software
Powering the Apple iPhone 6s is the Apple A9 (14/16 nm - maker dependant), paired with 2GB of RAM. That combination should handle day-to-day multitasking and most games without breaking a sweat. It runs iOS 9, upgradable to iOS 15.8.5 out of the box, so the software experience feels current.
Camera
On the camera side, the Apple iPhone 6s is led by a 12 MP main sensor. Expect solid detail in good light, with the usual softness creeping in once the sun goes down.
Battery
Keeping the lights on is a Li-Ion 1715 mAh, non-removable (6.91 Wh) cell. With moderate use you can expect to end the day with charge to spare.
Our Opinion
After spending time with the spec sheet and what Apple is promising, here is where we land. Apple has clearly gone for substance over gimmicks here, and we respect that approach. It gets the basics right, offering a dependable main camera, a crisp display, which is exactly what most buyers are really after. If your priority is a phone that just works, day in and day out, then this one deserves a spot on your shortlist. You could nitpick a few things, as you can with any phone in this bracket. Overall though, the Apple iPhone 6s is easy to recommend to the right buyer.
