With the Apple iPhone 6, Apple is clearly aiming at buyers who want a well-rounded phone without too many compromises. Here is our take on what it brings to the table. Announced in 2014, September 09. Released 2014, September 19, it arrives at a time when the competition is as tight as ever.
Design & Display
Up front there is a 4.7 inches, 60.9 cm 2 (~65.8% screen-to-body ratio) screen, pushing a resolution of 750 x 1334 pixels, 16:9 ratio (~326 ppi density). Colours look punchy and text stays clean, so you will not have much to complain about here. It is not trying to reinvent the wheel with its design, but it does look the part. You can pick it up in a few finishes, including Space Gray.
Performance & Software
Powering the Apple iPhone 6 is the Apple A8 (20 nm), paired with 1GB of RAM. For the kind of tasks most of us throw at a phone, there is plenty of muscle here. It runs iOS 8, upgradable to iOS 12.5.8 out of the box, so the software experience feels current.
Camera
On the camera side, the Apple iPhone 6 is led by a 8 MP main sensor. It is not a pro camera rig, but for everyday memories it gets the job done nicely.
Battery
There is a Li-Po 1810 mAh, non-removable (6.9 Wh) battery inside, which should comfortably see most people through a full day on a single charge.
Our Opinion
After spending time with the spec sheet and what Apple is promising, here is where we land. Apple has clearly gone for substance over gimmicks here, and we respect that approach. It gets the basics right, offering a dependable main camera, a crisp display, which is exactly what most buyers are really after. For someone who simply wants a dependable daily driver that will not let them down halfway through the day, this ticks a lot of boxes. There are rivals that beat it in one area or another, as is always the case in this segment. Overall though, the Apple iPhone 6 is easy to recommend to the right buyer.
