With the Apple iPhone 12, Apple is clearly aiming at buyers who want a well-rounded phone without too many compromises. Here is our take on what it brings to the table. Announced in 2020, October 13, it arrives at a time when the competition is as tight as ever.
Design & Display
On the front you get a 6.1 inches, 90.2 cm 2 (~86.0% screen-to-body ratio) panel, pushing a resolution of 1170 x 2532 pixels, 19.5:9 ratio (~460 ppi density). Colours look punchy and text stays clean, so you will not have much to complain about here. It is not trying to reinvent the wheel with its design, but it does look the part. You can pick it up in a few finishes, including Black.
Performance & Software
Under the hood you will find the Apple A14 Bionic (5 nm), paired with 4GB of RAM. For the kind of tasks most of us throw at a phone, there is plenty of muscle here. It runs iOS 14.1, upgradable to iOS 27 out of the box, so the software experience feels current.
Camera
The camera setup is one of the talking points here, with a 12 MP sensor doing the heavy lifting. Expect solid detail in good light, with the usual softness creeping in once the sun goes down.
Battery
Keeping the lights on is a Li-Ion 2815 mAh (10.78 Wh) cell. With moderate use you can expect to end the day with charge to spare.
Our Opinion
After spending time with the spec sheet and what Apple is promising, here is where we land. What you are getting is a device that quietly covers the fundamentals rather than shouting about them. It gets the basics right, offering a dependable main camera, a crisp display, which is exactly what most buyers are really after. In day-to-day use it feels like the kind of device you can rely on, whether you are replying to messages, scrolling through social media, watching videos or taking the odd photo. You could nitpick a few things, as you can with any phone in this bracket. Overall though, the Apple iPhone 12 is easy to recommend to the right buyer.
